Bio

Joseph “Joe” Vieira is a Managing Director at JP Morgan Chase. He is the Chief Architect for Chase Operations, which supports call centers and back office operations for Chase Consumer and Community Banking. Joe has been in technology for over 30 years, including IBM, Andersen Consulting, and Chase positions. He has been with Chase in Wilmington, DE, for over 25 years.

Joe received his B.A. from Rutgers University with a double major in Computer Science and Economics. After college, Joe worked as a software engineer at IBM’s software laboratory in Poughkeepsie, NY. Joe moved to the Philadelphia area in 1992 when he accepted a position with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). Joe led technology teams on engagements with financial industry and government clients. Joe was responsible for direct interaction with clients, technology designs, and solution delivery to meet investment, lending, and tax system challenges.

Joe left Andersen Consulting in 1996 to join a growing bank in Wilmington, First USA. Joe served as a Technology Manager and provided solutions for various card marketing programs and initiatives for the growing financial firm. During this same time, Joe completed an Executive Master’s in Technology Management at the University of Pennsylvania, a joint program between Wharton Business School and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

When First USA merged with Bank One and again with Chase, Joe led teams of systems architects that laid out the integration and replacement of large business applications. Joe has since led teams of technology professionals to redesign the technology architecture for Chase’s Home Lending line of business and currently leads the architecture of Chase Operations Technology. In these roles, Joe is characterized by his ability to work with abstract challenges and to organize solutions that bridge the gaps between IT and the business. This includes effectively using new technologies such as machine learning, blockchain, and cloud infrastructure to improve Chase operations. Joe’s innovative ideas have led to enterprise-wide solutions and innovative patent applications.

In 1990, Joe married his wife, Barb, whom he met at Rutgers University, where she studied Pharmacy. They have two daughters are both Ursuline alumnae, Meredith (’11) and Allison (’13). His daughters were active in field hockey, lacrosse, golf, math league, and science olympiad. Meredith and Allison have since graduated from the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University. Meredith lives in Wilmington and is an intern at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington. Allison lives in Philadelphia and is a dietitian at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Langhorne, PA.

Outside of work, Joe was active in youth sports while his daughters were young, including coaching youth soccer and softball. Joe remains active at St. Joseph on the Brandywine’s parish in Greenville, where he helps his wife Barbara with the Social Concerns Ministry, which includes food and gift drives such as Advent Angels (aka adopt-a-family) and Easter Angels (Easter dinners). Joe enjoys recreational golf and running events. Joe and Barb reside in Wilmington, DE.
