In 1975, Ursuline Academy’s Board of Trustees was formed to assume responsibility for the daily operations of the school, under the chairmanship of Taylor W. Hanavan. At that time, the Convent and school became separate corporations. The Convent corporation retained the name “Ursuline Academy, Inc.,” and the school corporation was known as “Ursuline Academy of Wilmington, Delaware, Inc.” For the first time in its history, lay principals were appointed to head the schools. A further reorganization of the school took place in 1988 when the Board of Trustees created the position of President of the Academy; Angela M. Boyle, class of 1953, was the first to hold this position. Today, Dr. Trisha Medeiros holds position of President and Maritza Poza-Grise, the Chair of the Board of Trustees.
General Board Responsibilities:
- Actively support and promote the school’s mission, vision,
strategic goals, and policy positions
- Stay fully informed about current school operations and issues
- Attend and participate in meetings
- Set policies that focus on long-range and strategic issues
- Maintain the interest of the entire academy when setting policies
and making decisions
- Maintain confidentiality with board deliberations
- Guards against conflicts of interest
- Contribute to the development program of the school, including
strategic planning for development, financial support, and active
involvement in annual and capital giving
- Ensure sound financial management

Stacey Hondry Bacchieri ’78
Karen is a partner at Connolly Gallagher LLP, where she practices in the fields of commercial bankruptcy, and provides various types of opinions for securitized transactions that occur throughout the country. Before becoming one of the founding partners of Connolly Gallagher LLP over six years ago, Karen practiced law at Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz LLP for 15 years, where she became partner and was a member on the Management Committee.
Julian H. Booker
Julian was born in Wilmington, Delaware where he attended Tatnall School through 10th grade, and graduated from Thomas McKean High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from the University of Delaware.
Mardee Abessinio Cool ’86
Mardee is an Ursuline graduate, Class of 1986. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Delaware in Business Administration. Mardee worked part-time in operations at Applied Bank from 1992 to 2002.
Eugene Delle Donne
As a Vice President of Delle Donne & Associates, Gene oversees operational infrastructure to support project development and project management, which currently includes over 3.5 million square feet of commercial development. Gene also serves as manager of Elena, LLC, managing business deals for 2015 WNBA MVP and Ursuline Academy alum, Elena Delle Donne ’08. Most recent partnership deals include Nike, Gatorade, and Christiana Care Health Care Health System.
Sister Kathleen Mary Donohue, OSU
Sister Kathleen Mary Donohue was born in New Haven, Connecticut. She has received an BA in history from the College of New Rochelle, MA in elementary education from Catholic University, MA in religious education from Fordham University, and MS in human services gerontology from the College of New
Kathleen is currently the Lead Admission Coordinator for Penn Rehab. She has worked in the field of acute rehabilitation for the past 25 years. She specializes in trauma, helping many families in Delaware and Pennsylvania who have been affected by traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injuries.
Sister Kathleen Finnerty, OSU
Yvette, and her husband, Ian, live in Newark, Delaware and have two children. Chinue, her daughter, attends Ursuline Academy (Class of 2022). Her son, Chinelo, attends Christiana High School via the Delaware Autism Program.
Andrew is charismatic and a dependable husband to his wife, Kimberly, as well as a father of two beautiful daughters. His eldest daughter, Kayla, has attended Ursuline Academy since seventh grade and attends George Washington University. Andrew’s youngest daughter, Abby, has attended Ursuline Academy since fifth grade and is a senior. Andrew has been an aid to Ursuline Athletics by coaching cross country, track, and basketball.
Abigail Rodgers Layton ’94
Abigail Rodgers Layton serves as the Director of the Family Division at the Delaware Office of the Attorney General. Prior to this role, she served as the Commander of the Child Predator Task Force, a statewide Task Force designed to combat technologically facilitated crimes against children. She has served as a Deputy Attorney General with the Delaware Department of Justice for 10 years.
Dr. Leidig joined Cardiology Physicians in June of 1996. Dr. Leidig obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His post-graduate training in Internal Medicine came during a residency at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Leidig was an attending physician at Keller Army Hospital at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
David Plaza is currently a Managing Director, Wealth Management Advisor within Merrill Lynch’s Global Wealth and Investment Management Division. David is the senior member of a five member advisory team that serves the wealth management needs of affluent families, senior corporate executives, business owners and tax-exempt organizations in the Wilmington, Delaware and surrounding metro Philadelphia area.
Maritza Poza-Grise, Board Chair
Maritza, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, is in her third year on the
Board serving the past two years on the Executive Committee. Prior to her retirement in 2015, Maritza was Global Vice-President for DuPont Human Resources. A native of Havana, Cuba and raised in Miami, Florida Maritza lives in Landenberg, Pennsylvania with her husband Steve. They have two sons and a daughter, Myriam, Class of 2012.
Kelly Romanczuk Rieger ’99
Kelly (Romanczuk) Rieger is a 1999 graduate of Ursuline Academy. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame where she received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Kelly is currently Supervising Senior Auditor at M&T Bank in Wilmington, DE where she is actively involved in the Women In Networking (WIN) and Intergenerational (iGen) Resource Groups.
Chuck and his wife, Linda Carmichael, have been married for 27 years. Linda is Chief Staff Attorney for Delaware Superior Court. They have 3 children. Their son, Gavin, attended Ursuline through 3rd grade. Their eldest daughter, Carling, attended Ursuline from age 3 through 2nd grade. She then returned to the Upper School and graduated in 2007. She went on to graduate from University of Delaware in 2011. Carling is now Special Assistant to the President Pre Tempore, Senator Patricia Blevins, in the Delaware State Senate.
Penny Tsaganos Saridakis ’85
Penny’s career includes completion of a Management Development Program at the Chase Manhattan Bank, followed by positions in the Credit Card Division and Private Banking International. After earning her MBA, Penny worked at MasterCard International as a Vice President in the Global Debit business and at Citibank as Vice President, Global Debit Products.
Steve is the President of CareerStaff Unlimited, LLC, a healthcare workforce solutions organization that is ranked in the top 1% of staffing organizations. Steve is directly responsible for increasing shareholder value by leading the Company’s revenue, profitability, strategic growth, operations, and M&A activity.
Tom has served two terms on the UA Board of Trustees covering 11 years so far. Five of those years he served as Board Chair. A proud father of 4 daughters, all graduates of Ursuline Academy (2004, 05, 09, 12). Tom has coached CYM Volleyball (9 seasons) and MS Field Hockey.

Throughout her life, Jessie has been driven by a singular belief that all children need and deserve high-quality learning opportunities, regardless of who they are or where they live. After 20 years of working in education technology, Jessie joined DreamBox Learning® in 2010 as Chair, President, and CEO.
